Summer might mean school’s out, but it certainly doesn’t mean the countless other fun ways of learning, doing, and making have to stop. How about developing drawing and storytelling skills with this fun, one-page comic template by Lisa Adib, featuring her omnipresent bunny character and its favorite companion, a book!

Download it below, print it, and give it to your children for an easy summer activity. Decide what book Bunny is reading. (It can be a book they’ve read recently, a favorite, or something they make up themselves!) Have them draw the title, the cover, and key scenes they love. Then compare notes and discuss. Reading and literacy don’t end on the last page. Conversation, creativity, and creation all extend our language and communication abilities. So after diving into our summer reading lists? Let’s draw!

How to use Storyvor’s “Draw Your Own Summer Comic” print-outs

  • Decide what Bunny’s beach read is
Bunny is reading a book, and all over the page, there’s plenty of space to portray what that book is about. It can be a made-up read or a recent favorite. The key is to think creatively about how to portray the book in a few panels, key scenes, and phrases.

  • Draw your favorite scenes — or write them!
Think about how to show the book creatively. This is harder than it looks! Sequencing, sizes, choosing dialogue: all of it stretches imagination, ideation, and storytelling skills.

  • Color it all in
Once you’ve drawn the scenes, bring in the color! What colors portray the moods and themes of the book? Why?

  • Discuss
If it’s a real book, cover the title and see if people can guess which one based on your drawings and clues!
