Getting children to read — and enjoy reading — can shape their entire lives. But it can also seem like an insurmountable challenge in today’s world. Screens are flashy, fast, and everywhere. Books are quieter, slower, and take a bit more effort. And yet they’re also infinitely rewarding, and an antidote to the fast-paced, brain-stressing deluge of much of today’s media.
So how do we help our children and students become curious, confident, and joyful readers? Celebrate reading! Make literacy visible, make it loud, make it fun and communal, make it an opportunity to connect, discuss, and discover.
It helps when parents, teachers, and caregivers are visibly enthusiastic about reading. Having age- and theme-appropriate books accessible and available, making space for cozy reading time, and inviting conversations about stories all go a long way toward encouraging happy readers. Read-alouds and lively book discussions can be especially powerful for children who are still building their confidence in reading.
