Written and illustrated by Benji Davies

Verdict:

Gentle, evocative, and perfectly cozy, this picture book is ideal for six and under.

What is it about?

This story is about two wishes coming together: a little snowflake wants a good place to land, and a little girl wants her tree to be pretty. As each of them goes through a day, they find their wishes fulfilled the next morning in entirely unexpected ways.

Our take:

Beautiful, expressive illustrations carry this large-format picture book into excellent read-aloud territory, where every spread carefully communicates emotions and themes. Though the black text can be a little hard to read against certain night-time spreads, the art is suitably evocative for young listeners, as well as new language learners. The story manages to conjure feelings of longing and belonging with very little text.

Perfect fit for:

This can be a Christmas story or a winter story. It is leisurely getting to its conclusion, with pretty pictures showing the sky, the city, the countryside, the house, and the characters as they move toward meeting. This is a perfect story for quiet times, for helping children during periods of waiting, and for talking about the granting of wishes. The story is especially suitable for young children, six and under.

Conversation Starters

  1. Where do snowflakes come from? Do they have to fall?

  2. Do you like snow? Why?

  3. When you do not get something you want, do you find something else that will be good instead?

  4. How was the little snow flake like a star?

  5. The little snowflake was happy when other snowflakes joined it. Do you like being with other people like you or alone?
