Knight Owl

Written and illustrated by Christopher Denise

Verdict: ✦✦✦✦✧

A crowd-pleaser. Appealingly illustrated, with lots of cute animals and a story that is both sweet and humorous.

What is it about:

In Knight Owl, written and illustrated by Christopher Denise, a little Owl goes up against threats twice his size . . . and perseveres, in this sweet and lively picture book. The little Owl stands no chance against the foe that comes and visits. And yet, gathering his courage, he’s brave, clever, and finds a way to not only make the most of the situation, but improve it for everyone.

Our take:

It’s a classic underdog (or under-owl?) tale, one illustrated with such wide appeal and humor that it’s sure to please. Plus, the read-aloud aspect is high, with many voices, sound effects, and moments of brilliant suspense to have fun with as a parent or teacher. The book is large format, and kids will instantly relate to the little wide-eyed owl. Denise uses gorgeous digital and mixed media tools to illustrate his work detailed and appealing spreads. A fun read with the perfect amount of humor and cuteness.

Perfect for: Young adventurers ages 0-7.

Conversation starters:

  • Owl didn’t fight the dragon the way we might expect. What did he do instead?

  • How do you think being small or different can be a good thing?

  • If you could give Owl another adventure, what would it be?
